Effect of Host Diet and Insect Source on Synergy of Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Mortality to Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki by Zwittermicin A

چکیده
ZwittermicinA acts synergisticallywith the insecticidal activity ofBacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstakiBerliner against gypsymoth (Lymantria dispar (L.)) larvae. The objective of this study was to assess the inßuence of insect source and diet on this synergy. Zwittermicin A increased the mortality caused by B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki in gypsy moths collected from four population sources feeding on artiÞcial diet, and on larvae feeding on four tree species, in a dose-dependent manner. Zwittermicin A did not cause mortality of L. dispar when applied alone. The ability of zwittermicin A to act synergistically with B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki did not differ greatly among these four populations, although mortality was slightly lower in a Þeld-collected population from Michigan. Zwittermicin A increased the activity ofB. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki on L. dispar feeding onwhite oak, aspen, larch, andwillow. Larvalmortalitywas directly proportional to the concentration of zwittermicin A applied to foliage, although the synergistic effect of zwittermicin A differed among host species. These results suggest strategies for employing synergists in the application and resistance management of microbial pesticides.

متن کاملEffect of clonal variation among hybrid poplars on susceptibility of gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) to Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki.
Trees in the genus Populus can provide substantial commercial and ecological benefits, including sustainable alternatives to traditional forestry. Realization of this potential requires intensive management, but damage by defoliating insects can severely limit productivity in such systems. Two approaches to limiting these losses include cultivation of poplar varieties with inherent resistance t...

We studied the effects of combinations of Bacillus thuringiensis spores and toxins on the mortality of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) larvae in leaf residue bioassays. Spores of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki increased the toxicity of crystals of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki to both resistant and susceptible larvae. For B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki, resistance ratios were 1,20...

J. Econ. Populations from Florida that had been tr...

Levels, genetic traits and stability of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis of the Bang Bua Tong (BS) population of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella collected in Thailand were investigated. The BS population exhibited 668 and 66.5-fold resistance to formulations derived from B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Toarow CT®), and B. thuringiensis subsp. aizawai (XenTari®), respectively. In ...
